How to find a hidden Bluetooth tracker (AirTag, Tile, SmartTag)

Bluetooth trackers are cheap, tiny, and last a year on one battery. That makes them genuinely useful for finding lost keys — and genuinely usable for following someone. If you suspect one has been planted on your car, in your bag, or among your things, this guide covers how to find it.

Work through it in order. The built-in tools are faster when they work, and a general scanner catches the cases they don't.

First: is it even a Bluetooth tracker?

Worth settling early, because it determines whether scanning can help at all.

Bluetooth trackers (AirTag, Tile, Samsung SmartTag, Chipolo) have no GPS and no cellular radio. They broadcast a BLE advertisement and rely on other people's phones passing nearby to relay a location back to the owner. Because they broadcast constantly, a BLE scanner can see them.

GPS trackers with a cellular SIM report location directly over the mobile network. Many have no Bluetooth radio at all. A BLE scanner will not find these — no app can, on any phone. They're bulkier and need periodic charging or hardwiring, so they're usually hidden in a vehicle's electrical system. If you've swept thoroughly for BLE and found nothing but still have concrete reason for concern, this is why, and it's a job for a physical search or a professional sweep.

Step 1: Use the built-in tracker alerts

Both major platforms now detect unwanted trackers automatically, using a shared industry standard for it. Start here, because these tools know things a generic scanner cannot — most importantly, whether a tag has been traveling with you over time while separated from its owner.

On iPhone: unwanted-tracker alerts are on by default. You'll get an "item detected near you" notification. You can also open the Find My app to see and play a sound on the item.

On Android: unknown tracker alerts are built in and run automatically. You can also trigger a manual scan under Settings → Safety & emergency → Unknown tracker alerts.

Manufacturer-specific tools worth running too: Tile's Scan and Secure in the Tile app, and Samsung's Unknown tag search in SmartThings Find. Each vendor knows its own hardware best.

If any of these flags something, follow its prompts — most will play a sound, which makes the physical search trivial.

Step 2: Scan for what the built-in tools miss

Here's the gap. Automatic alerts only cover trackers that participate in the unwanted-tracking standard and behave the way the spec expects. They can miss:

  • Off-brand and no-name trackers that implement none of it.
  • Trackers with the anti-stalking behavior disabled through modified firmware.
  • A tag still within range of its owner's phone, which may not classify as "separated" and so never triggers an alert.
  • Any tracker you want to find right now, rather than after the hours of shared travel an alert typically requires.

This is where a general BLE scanner earns its place: it doesn't care whether a device is a known brand or whether it's behaving. If it's broadcasting, it shows up.

Run a scan with BLE Sniffer for Android and read the list with these in mind:

  • Check the manufacturer. Decoded from the company identifier in the advertisement. Apple, Tile, and Samsung entries in a place none of your own gear should be are the obvious flags.
  • Expect a lot of noise. Earbuds, TVs, thermostats, and car systems all broadcast. Most of what you see is innocent.

Step 3: Isolate it with a controlled test

A single scan in a busy place produces too many candidates. Force the signal apart from the noise:

  1. Move the car, or move yourself, well away from other devices. An empty parking lot beats a garage; a field beats an apartment building.
  2. Scan again. The list should shrink dramatically. Anything still present has moved with you — that's the important signal, and it's the same logic the platform alerts use.
  3. Repeat somewhere else entirely. A device that appears in both locations is either yours or attached to you.
  4. Rule out your own gear. Power off your earbuds, watch, and anything else you carry, then rescan.

Expect address rotation to complicate this. Privacy-conscious devices — trackers very much included — change their Bluetooth address every fifteen minutes or so, so the same tag can appear as a new entry partway through your search. Track it by its manufacturer data signature rather than its address.

Step 4: Physically locate it

Once you have a candidate, signal strength is what walks you to it. Watch RSSI as you move: stronger means closer, and a slow sweep narrows the search area with each pass. Places to check, because trackers get hidden well:

In a car — under and behind seats, in seat rails, the glovebox, the trunk and spare-tire well, wheel wells, behind bumpers, under the license plate, the OBD-II port under the dash, roof rails, and the gas-cap door.

In your things — bag linings and inner pockets, luggage seams, jacket pockets, between a phone case and phone, in a wallet's card slots, or inside anything you were recently given as a gift.

Signal strength is affected by metal and by your own body, so a tag inside a metal panel will read weaker than its actual distance suggests. Sweep slowly and check high and low, not just at waist height.

If you find one

Some considerations that matter more than the technical ones:

  • A tracker planted to follow someone is a crime in most places. If you believe you're being stalked, this is a matter for law enforcement.
  • Think before destroying it. A tracker is evidence — it has a serial number, and in the case of an AirTag it can be tied to the account that registered it. Police can act on that. Smashing it destroys the best lead to who put it there.
  • Removing it tells them you know. In some situations that's exactly what you want; in others it isn't. If you're in a domestic-violence situation, consider contacting a support organization before you change anything, since an abuser realizing they've lost tracking can escalate matters.
  • Document it first. Photograph where it was before you move it.

Sweeping regularly

If you have reason to check often, a scan takes under a minute. Log your sessions and export to CSV, then compare across days: the devices that appear in every session, in every location, are the ones worth investigating. Everything BLE Sniffer records stays on-device.

A word on ethics and legality

Scanning for advertisements is passive — you're reading broadcasts sent openly to anyone in range, and sweeping your own car or belongings is entirely legitimate. Using the same techniques to locate someone else's property, or to follow a person, is not. Scan your own space freely; don't turn the tools on anyone else. General information, not legal advice.

Try the built-in alerts on your phone first — they're automatic and they know about separated-tag behavior a generic scanner can't infer. Then scan with a general BLE scanner to catch the off-brand and misbehaving tags the alerts miss, isolate the candidate by moving somewhere quiet and scanning again, and use signal strength to walk it down.
